LARA'S BACK, BUT CHANDERPAUL REMAINS CAPTAIN
ST. JOHN'S, Antigua, Tues. Apr. 5, 2005: Trinidadian batsman Brian Lara is back but will have to take orders from Guyanese-born Shivnarine Chanderpaul for the remainder of the Digicel 2005 Home Series. The West Indies Cricket Board yesterday named Chanderpaul as captain of the West Indies team for the remainder of the series, which sees the West Indies being host to South Africa and Pakistan. Lara will return as a player, without any special title. The 30-year-old batsman, whose history-making knock of 203 in the first test match thrilled fans at Bourda, will next have to lead the side in the second test match which opens on Friday, April 8 in Lara’s home country - Port of Spain, Trinidad. Also back on the side is fellow Guyanese, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Dwayne Bravo and Chris Gayle. Convenor of selectors, Michael "Joey" Carew, said he and his panel were pleased with the team's overall performance in the first test match and he expected that the "team will go from strength to strength as the series progresses." "Coach Bennett King must be one of the happiest men in the Caribbean at present," Carew was quoted in a WICB statement as saying. "Given the talent that has been on display. He must also be quite optimistic with the Cricket World Cup in mind and even beyond that." But there was no word on the status of Dwayne Smith and Ravi Rampaul, who have also been released from their personal endorsement contracts by Cable & Wireless. The team to face the South Africans again on Friday is as follows: Chanderpaul, Courtney Browne (vice captain), Wavell Hinds, Sarwan, Lara, Ryan Hinds, Daren Powell, Pedro Collins, Reon King and Dwight Washington.
