PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad: Outgoing chief executive of the Trinidad & Tobago Cricket Board, Alloy Lequay. is urging regional politicians to stay out of West Indies cricket. Lequay is not in favour of regional leaders getting involved in the ongoing dispute between the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and the West Indies Players' Associations (WIPA). The Trinidadian made the comment at the just concluded four-day conference in Castries, St Lucia, to set up a three-member prime ministerial team to settle the two organizations' dispute. CARICOM heads, St Lucia Prime Minister Dr Kenny Anthony, chairman of CARICOM, Grenada Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell and Barbados Prime Minister Owen Arthur are the three members involved. On Thursday, Arthur said he and his Barbados government have strong reservations about Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community getting involved in disputes between independent parties like the (WICB) and (WIPA) and a few of his counterparts, including Dr. Mitchell, shared the same view. "You cannot dictate to either party on the way to do things," Lequay said. "You can't tell the WICB which team to pick." Lequay added that the regional game can start reviving as soon as the WICB appoints a new president in St. Maarten early next month. Step down now, Dr Mitchell Earlier this month media reports suggested that Dr. Mitchell "should do the decent thing and stand down as chairman of the Caribbean Community's sub-committee on cricket." The report stated that the Grenadian prime minister cannot be counted on the make an honest decision on any matter relating to anything in which the Board is involved. "He cannot be counted on to be an honest broker on any dispute between the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB), the body that regulates the game in the Caribbean, and its players. "Neither do we believe that senior officials in the WICB can have any confidence in the prime minister's decision-making on any matter relating to anything in which the board is involved," the report said. The article went on to say that cricket is more than just a game that bring West Indians together, it is "the Caribbean's project and of the possibilities of the region's relationship with the rest of the world." The article concluded by saying: "By giving succour to indiscipline and bad behaviour Dr Mitchell harbours harm to West Indies cricket." Reprinted from Caribbean Net News caribbeannetnews.com
