Hillsborough, Carriacou, February 21, 2011- Athletes of the five primary schools in Carriacou are competing this week for track and field supremacy in the annual Inter-primary Sports Meet of the Grenada Union of Teachers (GUT). The meet commences on Tuesday, February 22, at the Hillsborough Recreation Ground with field events, including the shot put. Organisers have reintroduced the shot put, which was not part of the field events for several years. Track events start Friday, February 25. Kerwin Noel, Chairman of the GUT Sports Committee, said the two-day lapse is to give schools adequate time for their final preparations for the march pass and the track event. This year, athletes from Petite Martinique are not participating in the meet. Noel said their absence was due to the unavailability of an adequate playing field on the island for athletics training. He thanked Ribena for sponsoring the Inter-primary Sports Meet for yet another year. George F. Huggins, agents for Ribena, was represented by marketing official George “Porgie’’ Cherebin at a ceremony marking the launch of the 2011 sports meet. Cherebin said Huggins was elated to again be the official sponsor and praised the organisers for their level of commitment in putting together the event. The Inter-primary Sports Meet is supported by the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs. Senior coach, Jester Emmons, assured of the Sports Division’s backing for any sporting activity that will positively contribute to developing young people. From Deanna Isaac Carriacou
