GRENADA - The drum corps of the St. Andrew’s Anglican Secondary School (SAASS) stole the spotlight at the 2010 Inter-Secondary School Drumfest at the National Stadium last Friday and walked away with championship honors. The competition was organized by the Ministry of Culture and was attended by Prime Minister Tillman Thomas and Senator Arley Gill, as well as by other dignitaries and hundreds of animated and appreciative spectators. All the major secondary schools in the country participated in the competition and every school gave a good account of itself, since many hours of intense practice would have gone into the actual preparation over the past few weeks. A guest appearance was made by the St. George’s Anglican Primary School. The SAASS team was able to wow the spectators with a scintillating performance, rich in creativity, originality and choreography. They were able to amass a total of 165 points, which landed them in 1st position. They were followed by Presentation Brothers’ College with 153 points and Carriacou Combined with 152.5 points. SAASS also got the awards for Best Display and Best Dress. So far, the St. Andrew’s Anglican Secondary School has won a number of championship titles for the academic year 2009-10, which includes the Inter Secondary School Girls’ Football Competition, the Inter Secondary Schools’ Volley Ball Competition and the Inter Secondary Schools’ Basketball Competition. The male athletes at the school were able to rack up the most points in the recently held National Champs at the Athletics Stadium and the school seems very confident about its chances of taking back the INTERCOL championship title this year. The competition takes place on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. SAASS, a major powerhouse in athletics, will be aiming at dethroning the reigning athletic champs, the Mc Donald’s College, and regaining the title which it held for a number of years during the 1980s and 1990s.
