INSIDE GRENADA
THURSDAY December 20,2007
by Lester Smith
The 2007 Inter Sector Football Competition played during the period Oct Dec 13 2007 proved without a doubt the best ever Inter Sector Football Competition held from its inception.
Even though the competition started late there was an overwhelming response from the business community to register and participate. Twenty four teams enjoyed a warm, friendly and at times exhilarating football. At the end, Seamen and Waterfront proved to be the best team by winning 1 0 over Hubbards in the final. Infact, it was Hubbards third trip to the finals only to achieve runner up for the third time.
The competition featured a number of important objectives. The idea of uniting various businesses together on the football pitch could only help establish and in most cases build on the existing relationships between them. It was a beautiful site to behold when the likes of Ian Blanchard, Nixon Barry, Ricky Charles: Managers of Cable and Wireless, Nixon Electrical and FCIB respectively took to the pitch and played a vital role for their team in the competition.
Refereeing was of a high standard as even FIFA officials were present to officiate at matches. In fact, it was a first for the competition that officials were being paid.
Most evidently featured throughout the tournament was the fans. Scores of football fanatics converged across the various pitches each match day. Quinn Co. Jack Hammers and FCIB supporters were most outstanding.
The Finals produced much flare and excitement. Probably what was considered to be one of the better goals of the tournament was the strike from Leon Francis within the first two (2) minutes of the game as he rocketed a shot past the Hubbards goalkeeper to produce the lone goal of the finals. And even to add to that excitement was the magnificent display of football skills and talent from former National Player Bobboy Hood at the halftime interval.
The prize giving ceremony that followed the finals was exemplary, as over forty awards were presented to the various outstanding individuals and team performances. Keon Alexis received the Golden Boot Award scoring nineteen goals (19) from seven (7) matches, Kennedy Phillip from Hubbards was voted Player of the Tournament and received the Golden Shoe Award.
However, the ultimate prize of the day was the remarkable Golden Trophy that was presented to the Champions Seamen and Waterfront.
2007 was a special year for Inter Sector Football. My gratitude goes out to all the tournament contributors who provided financial and products support. And to all those who have worked so hard to ensure the success of the tournament; truly a demonstration of their love for football. They are all true ambassadors of the sport.
