Grenville, St. Andrew’s - June 29, 2010: A number of vendors from the Grenville Vendors’ Mall who have been thrown on the breadline as a result of the devastating fire from Sunday night (which completely destroyed their small businesses) met with government ministers today at the Victoria Park, Grenville. The vendors met with Ministers Patrick Simmons, Sylvester Quarless and Glen Noel to air their concerns and grievances and to offer their suggestions and recommendations. The consensus was that Government needed to provide them with some form of financial assistance for a temporary period to help them get back on their feet. Some suggested that Government help then find a temporary location as soon as possible so that they could eke out a living in the meantime. A recommendation was made by vendors that the reconstructed booths should be made from concrete blocks so that they could insure the property in the future. Senator Glen Noel, who is the junior minister in the Ministry of Housing, encouraged the vendors to come forward and make their names and losses known so that they could have an idea as to the totality of the losses sustained. He said that Cabinet will have to put together a task force that will look into the situation and promised to meet with them again at some time in the near future. Meanwhile, through the initiative and influence of Minister of Parliament for St. Andrew’s South East, Hon. Patrick Simmons, under whom the town of Grenville falls, General Manager of LIME has given his commitment to provide some assistance to the victims of the Grenville fire.
