Hillsborough, Carriacou, June 4th, 2010 –Well known constitutional lawyer, Dr. Francis Alexis, will lead a series of meetings highlighting the draft legislation for the implementation of local government in Carriacou and Petite Martinique. The first meeting will take place on Tuesday, June 8th, at the Petite Martinique RC School, commencing at 6pm. Residents are being asked to make a special effort to attend. Dr. Alexis, while a minister of government in 1995, prepared a bill on local government which was passed in the Parliament but never received the assent of the Governor General. During the 2008 election campaign, which was won by the NDC, the party promised that once elected, it would fulfil the constitutional rights of the people of Carriacou and Petite Martinique, in keeping with Section 107 of the Grenada Constitution. Section 107 states that, “there shall be a council for Carriacou and Petite Martinique which shall be the principal organ for local government.” Senator George Prime, Minister for Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs, said the implementation of local government will see a bottom up approach to governance. It’s in keeping with the government’s principles of good governance and respect for the rights of all citizens, he added. Tuesday’s meeting will be followed by another on June 22nd for the people of Carriacou at the Hillsborough Government School. By Deanna Isaac Carriacou
