Hillsborough, Carriacou - After years of operating in a small building close to the Carriacou Police Station, with customers standing on the sidewalk to purchase fish, fisher folks and other residents of Carriacou and Petite Martinique now have a new state-of-the-art fish market in which to conduct business. The fish market, which is adjacent to the Carriacou Branch of the Marketing and National Marketing Board, is equipped with an ice maker and storage facility. Ice is being sold at 15 cents per pound to fishermen and 25 cents to the rest of the public. Fisheries Officer in the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs, Junior McDonald, has been highly praised for his support of the fish market project, which has added value to the fishing sector of the Tri-island State. Fishing is a significant contributor to the nation’s economy. The value of a monthly catch in a single community, such as Carriacou or Gouyave in St. John, could be as high as EC$350,000. Meanwhile, work is soon to commence on a new $30 million fish market project at Gouyave. By Deanna Isaac Carriacou
