ST. GEORGE NORTH EAST FOOTBALL UPDATE (8TH JUNE 2010)
click
ST GEORGE'S - Perennial favourites Tempe All Blacks maintained hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals when they defeated Boca Strikers by three (3) goals to one (1) in a hard fought contest at the Vendome playing field on Tuesday. The victory lifted All Blacks to seven points from four games played. With three games left to be played by them in the preliminary stage of the competition they can total a maximum of sixteen points. Goals by Dwayne Jerome, Finbar Williams and Carlson Drake (an own goal) for Tempe were countered with the solitary strike of Travis Barry for Boca. The player of the game was undoubtedly Boca's custodian Dennis Nelson. He began the game poorly conceding a relatively soft goal to Dwayne Jerome but gave an almost perfect display thereafter. Travis Barry put Boca Strikers level before half time with a diving header and with a mixture of dogged defending, highlighted by a series of brilliant saves by Dennis Nelson they (Boca Strikers) remained in the game until the eightieth (80th) minute. It all fell apart when Kurtis Andrew attempted to surprise Tempe All Blacks with a quickly taken free kick. This backfired and it was Boca Strikers who were left confused as Finbar Williams capitalised on their indecision to slot past goal keeper Dennis Nelson with the help of a hefty deflection. Worse was to follow as Travis Barry turned from hero to villain and was red carded by "Birthday Boy" Referee Cuthbert Brown for the use of intemperate language. In the 90th minute substitute Carlson Drake was introduced into the game by Boca Strikers and with his first touch attempting to defend a low corner only succeeded in heading the ball into his own net, to the dismay of goalkeeper Nelson. Boca's misery was complete when Jarmalie Phillip contrived to earn a red card after the final whistle for his use of intemperate language directed at the "Birthday Boy". The next fixture will be played on Thursday at the Vendome playing field and will feature the St. George U 20 against Red Out. The St. George North East Football Committee takes this opportunity in wishing a happy birthday (Tuesday) to our chief referee Mr. Cuthbert Brown. From Michael Bascombe
