TNT CHIPS IN $120 MILLION TO SAVE LIAT
PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, Mon. Jan. 10, 2005: Another financially beleaguered regional carrier could soon get bailed out, thanks to the Patrick Manning administration of Trinidad and Tobago. The oil rich island is pledging to fund a $120 million bailout of the carrier, according to the Trinidad Express. The money will come out of the $300 million fund set up by the Manning administration to assist Caricom countries with their social and economic needs, according to Valley. All that’s left now is for Caricom leaders to give it the go ahead and that could happen in about nine days. The agreement comes on the heels of a weekend meeting in Prime Minister Manning and his Trade Minister Ken Valley, as well as the leaders of Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, St Vincent and the Grenadines and a representative of St Lucia. More cost-cutting measures, including staff cuts, are also expected by LIAT management in an effort to keep it flying. Reprinted from hardbeatnews.com
