GRENADA SAILING FESTIVAL ON THIS WEEKEND
Grenadians are ready to show the rest of the Caribbean that there is life after Ivan and www.caribbeanracing.com will be there to provide daily coverage. As in years past, the Grenada Sailing Festival encompasses two events, the yacht racing and the workboat regatta. Both events will kick off on Friday with the special Grenadian welcome party on Grand Anse Beach. Local steel pan bands will set the mood and then Tivoli Drummers and DJ Blackstorm will pick up the pace to get the beach rocking until… The racing schedule will start in earnest on Saturday with the Mount Gay Race Series for the yachts and the unique spectacle of some forty brightly painted wooden, bamboo rigged workboats lined along Grand Anse Beach - representing all the traditional fishing and sailing communities of Gouyave, Sauteurs, Woburn, and sister islands Carriacou and Petite Martinique. On Sunday, the shortened Grenada Yacht Club Race Series will give all yacht crews the chance to get to Grand Anse Beach to enjoy the excitement of the final stages of the Grenada Workboat Regatta being held there. Starting with the Coca Cola National Team Sailing Championships. Junior and Senior teams representing each sailing community will match race in the GSF16s for the sought after National Team Champion titles and trophies. Following this, supporters have another chance to cheer on their favorites, when the top placed crews from each racing class take over the GSF 16s and hit the water to match-race to become the Cable & Wireless/Grenlec Workboat Skipper of the Year – one of the most exciting races of the weekend. Cash prizes of US$1,000.00, US$500.00 and US$250.00 will be up for the taking, plus the Island Water World Trophy. The yacht racing will continue on Monday with the Heineken Race Series and as always the final day will start with the ever popular Pursuit Race. The LaSource Trophy Race Series will wind up the event and provide the last chance to improve positions for the overall class prizes and of course, the title of Overall Festival Winner, who will take away the LaSource Trophy and two return tickets Grenada/UK courtesy of British Airways.
