OAS CONGRATULATES GRENADA
The Organization of American States takes the opportunity to extend to the Government and People of Grenada best wishes on the happy occasion of the 31st Anniversary of Independence. The celebration of Independence this year comes at a special time when both the people and the country itself are in a phase of recovery and renewal. The major hurricane, which ravaged the country and reversed some of the gains of the earlier years of independence and nationhood, has at the same time caused reflection and a desire to rebuild on a more sustainable basis. The passage of the hurricane has also demonstrated, in a tangible way, that Grenada belongs to a family of nations and words such as “unity” and “solidarity” have value and meaning. The Organization of American States, the oldest regional organization, stands as a partner with the Government and People of Grenada and provides a forum for multilateral dialogue and concerted actions. The Organization remains committed to draw upon the breath and depth of its membership to assist the country and to facilitate the improvement in the quality of life of the People. We are steadfast in our commitment to work to promote in our Hemisphere good governance, the observance of human rights, peace and security, an expansion of trade and to address the complex problems of poverty, illegal drugs and corruption. The Organization of American States, therefore, takes great pleasure in extending to the Government and People of Grenada its best wishes on the 31st Anniversary of Independence and our hope for good fortune, peace and prosperity.
