MINISTRY OF HEALTH FACILIATES WORKSHOP ON POST TRAUMATI...
The Government of Grenada, in collaboration with Government of Canada and the Pan American Health Organisation, is conducting a Trainer of Trainers Workshop from 21st -25th February at the Sunset View Conference Room. Following a natural disaster such as Hurricane Ivan, it is expected that up to five percent of the population (perhaps higher in some vulnerable groups such as the elderly, single parents and disaster workers, including health care providers) will develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). To address this, it is essential that health care professionals know how to identify and treat PTSD and the health care system can meet this need. The Workshop is funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and facilitated by Dr. Stan Kutcher, Psychiatrist, and Dr. Sonia Chehit, Psychiatrist Fellow, from Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia. Ms. Hope Beanlands, Project manager, is also in Grenada with the Team. Participants at the workshop include doctors, nurses, social workers and other health care providers throughout the State. This Workshop is a follow up to earlier training initiated prior to Ivan, in which four trainers had already been trained. Source: Ministry of Health, the Environment, Social Security and Ecclesiastical Relations It is anticipated that on completion of the programme 60 health professionals will have been fully trained to identify and treat PTSD.
