GRENADIAN LAWYERS TAKE PROTEST AGAINST AG NOMINEE TO TH...

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, Thurs. Feb. 24, 2005: Lawyers in Grenada took their protest action against the government’s choice for attorney general one notch higher yesterday, taking to the streets of St George’s in single file, in a silent protest. Despite the lack of placards, chanting, singing or loud speakers, the action had its impact as lawyers dressed in business attire, with red ribbons attached to the collars and shirt pockets, walked silently in a long line, much to the awe of many Grenadians. The lawyers are objecting to the Keith Mitchell’s administration choice of Jamaican-born Hugh Wildman for attorney general, not because of his nationality but because they claim that despite being qualified, Wildman’s behavior and conduct, inside the court and within the precincts of the Court, were quite alien to the high standard that is expected. Wildman has served in the post of director of public prosecution and special prosecutor. However, Minister for Legal Affairs, Elvin Nimrod, says government has exercised its legal and constitutional right to propose a candidate for appointment to the post of attorney general, subject, of course, to the approval of the Judicial and Legal Services Commission. He further explained that the Judicial and Legal Services Commission has given no indication that it has any legal or other difficulties in the choice of Wildman as a proposed candidate for the post. The protest action is expected to build up by the end of the week when the members of the Civil Society Organisation decide what role to play to ensure that the situation doesn’t worsen. Members of the CSO meet with the lawyers on Wednesday evening. They will meet again on Friday to finalise a decision for the upcoming week. Reprinted from hardbeatnews.com
