WILDMAN APPOINTED LEAGAL ADVISER TO GRENADA'S CABINET

ST GEORGE'S, Grenada (AP) - The Government yesterday appointed a controversial prosecutor as the legal adviser to Grenada's Cabinet, a week after an independent commission rejected him for the post of attorney-general. Hugh Wildman, who prosecutes cases as an adviser to the police department, was sworn as legal council to the Cabinet, the Government said. The Government did not provide details about Wildman's new duties. The appointment drew criticism from members of the Grenada Bar Association, which boycotted court proceedings for a month to protest Wildman's nomination as attorney-general. Lawyers accused Wildman of having a long history of intimidating and insulting defence attorneys and judges. Wildman has denied the accusations. The boycott ended last week after the Judicial and Legal Services Commission rejected Wildman's nomination. Wildman's latest appointment did not need confirmation by the commission, which is named by the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States Supreme Court to confirm top judicial nominees in seven countries. Peter David, a lawyer and Opposition parliamentarian, accused the Government of trying to give Wildman the same responsibilities he would have had as attorney-general. He demanded that the Government explain Wildman's new duties. "We find it unfortunate that the Government has appointed Mr Wildman the legal adviser to the Cabinet," David said. "The attorney-general is the principal legal adviser to the Cabinet... is the Cabinet going to have two legal advisers? ...What exactly is the Government trying to do?"
