LEGAL COMMISSION SAYS WILDMAN REJECTED BECAUSE HE WAS U...
CASTRIES, St Lucia (AP) - The Caribbean legal commission that rejected Grenada's choice of a new attorney general last week said Thursday it did so because he was unfit for the job. The Judicial and Legal Services Commission, based in St Lucia, rejected the appointment of Hugh Wildman to be Grenada's chief legal adviser on March 1. In considering the suitability of any person for public office, the commission is "influenced only by facts relevant to the issue of fitness", the four-member commission said in a statement. The commission, which declined to spell out why it found Wildman unfit, is appointed by the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States Supreme Court to confirm top judicial officials in seven countries. Wildman's appointment had drawn criticism from members of the Grenada Bar Association, saying Wildman had intimidated and insulted defence attorneys and judges. The association had boycotted court proceedings for a month to protest against his appointment. Grenada's government last week bowed to the decision, but Legal Affairs Minister Elvin Nimrod has said it "sets a dangerous precedent" because it gives "the impression that the lawyers have been rewarded for their irresponsible behaviour". Grenada on Tuesday announced it had sworn in both Wildman as legal counsel to the Cabinet and Nimrod, who keeps his portfolio but who has the added responsibility of being attorney general. Neither appointment is required to be approved by the Judicial and Legal Services Commission. Reprinted from jamaicaobserver.com
