WICB REMAINS MUM ON LARA’S POSSIBLE SELECTION
ST. JOHN'S, Antigua, Fri. Mar. 18, 2005: West Indies cricket board selectors yesterday reportedly picked a 13-man squad to face South Africa on March 31, but declined to reveal the squad or state whether Brian Lara and six other players were included. Leonard Robertson, a spokesman for the West Indies Cricket Board, would only say that the disclosure would be made to fans today. The Board’s lawyers had promised to the personal endorsement contracts Lara, Dwayne Bravo, Fidel Edwards, Chris Gayle, Ravi Rampaul, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Dwayne Smith have with Cable & Wireless contracts, for conflict of interest clauses and to reveal their eligibility for selection by noon yesterday. Meanwhile, Dinanath Ramnarine, president and CEO of the West Indies Players Association, yesterday, slammed Board officials for “unilaterally” setting their I”….own timeline for the naming of a team, ensuring that it takes advantage of the fact that the clock would run out.” “All this has put the 29 players ( that is the original 22 invited Players and the 7 Cable and Wireless contracted players) under undue and extreme stress which is inimical to team preparation, team unity and team performance,” Ramnarine said in a statement. WIPA also called for an open inquiry commissioned by heads of governments of Caricom, to address the cricket administration in the Caribbean. Reprinted from hardbeatnews.com
