The Ministry of Education is pleased to announce that the Japanese Government has offered financial Assistance under its Grant Assistance for Grass- Roots Human Security Projects (GGP), to support the rehabilitation of Secondary Schools. The announcement was made to Minister for Education Claris Charles and His Excellency Shigenibu, Japanese Ambasador, The Japanese Government’s commitment to the programme when he met with Prime Minister Keith Mitchell on Friday, March 18. The GGP provides nonrefundable financial assistance to NGOs, hospitals, schools, and other nonprofit associations to help implement their development projects. The availability of GGP funding in each eligible country provides Japanese Overseas Development Aid (ODA) with a new means of cooperation that has a direct impact on the well being of grass-roots communities. To date, several secondary schools have applied to the GGP for Grants to support initiatives is areas such as the remodeling and rebuilding of computer labs, to the restoration of school farms. The Japanese Government cannot support every project that is submitted, but will provide funds to appropriate projects after detailed examination and evaluation. Mr. Toshiaki Seto, third Secretary, Economy Section of the Embassy in Japan, is presently in Grenada visiting sites of the potential projects. The embassy or consulate will then make a determination to provide assistance, which next has to be approved by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tokyo. Source:Ministry of Education
