BROOKLYN-BASED CARIBBEAN CULTURAL THEATRE SPRING PRODUC...
After a hugely successful run during the winter, the Caribbean Cultural Theatre is putting on SHORTS again! This tropical fun-fest takes place April 7 – 17, 2005 in the heart of the cultural district of Downtown Brooklyn at South Oxford Space – 138 South Oxford Street. Part of the company’s Classic Stage Series, that highlights the work of some of the most distinguished writers form the Caribbean of the early to mid twentieth century, SHORTS showcases a few of the most hilarious short comic plays of veteran writer Freddie Kissoon. This rambunctious, rollicking, laugh-fest from one of the Caribbean’s most prolific playwrights, forms the largest retrospective of Mr. Kissoon’s work in the United States. A warmhearted look at Caribbean life from the cradle to the grave… and beyond, SHORTS (Zingay, Like Hog Love Mud, Beauty Contest, and Mamaguy) pulls on the awesome talents of a cast led by Comedienne – Susan Olton Kennedy (recently back from 2005 Carnival Comedy Tent), award winning Calypsonian – Doctor Witty, and AUDELCO Award® nominated actress – Dianne Dixon (recently seen in Unda Mi Nose Pt. 3). The talented pan-Caribbean troupe also features Barbadian Arnett Nurse, Jerry Victor from Guyana, along with Christopher Larmond and Ariane Wint from Jamaica. Reaching the zenith of his career with the weekly Trinidad and Tobago television sitcom Calabash Alley, Mr. Kissoon’s flair for holding up a mirror to the contradictions of island life is legendary. Founder of Trinidad’s oldest, continuously producing theatre company – The Strolling Players, and with well over sixty productions for stage and screen to his credit in a career spanning almost half a century Kissoon’s work has been warmly received throughout the Caribbean, Europe and North America. Directed by company artistic director E. Wayne McDonald, with March Tracey as Stage Manager, this spring laugh-fest takes place at the Caribbean Cultural Theatre’s home base at South Oxford Space - 138 So. Oxford Street (between Atlantic Ave. and Hanson Pl.), located a few blocks from the Atlantic Avenue transportation hub. Patrons can make reservations and get additional information by calling 718-783-8345 or get the added convenience of online ticketing via theatermania.com. Performances of SHORTS on April 7, 8, 9; 10 and 14, 15, 16; 17 begin at 8pm on Thursdays thru Saturdays, and at 6:30pm on Sundays. The Caribbean Cultural Theatre production of SHORTS is supported in part with public resources from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and Material for the Arts, with additional support from Carib Beer.
