GRENADA TO BENEFIT IN THE AREA OF HAZARD MITIGATION
As part of Grenada’s reconstruction process, the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) is planning a 13-month-project, to strengthen institutional and professional capacity to integrate hazard mitigation practices in development planning in Grenada. To this end, Mr. Cecil Frederick, Head of the Physical Planning Unit of the Ministry of Finance and Mr. David James, Director of Infrastructure of the Agency for Reconstruction and Development (ARD), attended a workshop in Port of Spain, Trinidad from March 31 – April 1, 2005. CIP is a national, membership-based association representing 5,800 planners. Over the past twenty years, CIP has collaborated with professionals in the Caribbean within the framework of the Commonwealth Association of Planners (CAP), an international organization dedicated to developing the skills of urban and regional planners across the Commonwealth, to meet the challenges of sustainable development. The main objectives of the proposed project for Grenada are: --To strengthen the capacity for coordinated, integrated and community-based local area planning involving the state and community representatives; and --To demonstrate a community-based local area planning methodology in one high priority community in Grenada including incorporating hazard mitigation practices. Once approved, the project should commence in June 2005. Source: Physical Planning Unit,Ministry of Finance
