USAID HELPING TO RECONSTRUCT YWCA BUILDING
USAID in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism are in the process of reconstructing the Young Women Christian Association (Y.W.C.A) building. This building is one of Grenada’s historic buildings and the project is the first of many which fall under the USAID/PADO Grenada Community Revitalization project. The building was built during the mid-18th century and possesses unique features depicting the Georgian Architectural period. The structure is two stories and was constructed from traditional red and yellow ochre brick work wall with reinforced concrete. The roof is a pitched roof construction covered with red fish scale roof tiles incorporating a timber suspended ceiling, fixed horizontally to the under side of the timber rafters. During the passage of Hurricane Ivan, most of the roof covering was lost including the timber suspended ceiling resulting in extensive water damage inside the building causing damage to the electrical installation and discoloring of internal walls and floor finishes. Some external and internal doors including timber windows have also been affected. This historical building now owned by the association was purchased in 1908. This building is known to Grenadians as the Young Women Christian Association or the (Y) -building. The association started in England through the work of two women, Lady Kinnard who operated hotels in London for young women who returned from the Crimean war and Miss Emma Roberts who organized prayer groups for young girls. The women met and joined their activities in 1855. In 1889 through the influence of a visiting English Y member, the Grenada Y was started in which Miss Lottie Wells became the president.
