GRENADIAN TAXI DRIVERS WELCOME AIR JAMAICA'S RETURN
By Linda Straker ST. GEORGE ‘S, Grenada (eTurboNews) Members of the Progressive Airport Taxi Union (PATU) in Grenada are in high spirits following the return of Air Jamaica to Point Salines International Airport last Saturday, April 16. “This gives us the assurance that business will buy us some profit as members had no choice but to strategically deal with the negative impact when the airline made the decision to suspend Grenada from its schedule for the one month period,” said PATU vice president Benjamin Romaine. “Our members now have a sense of hope that visitors are coming despite the challenging of insufficient total rooms and the reconstruction process since the passage of hurricane Ivan,” he continued. Romaine said that during the time of the suspension, passengers had stressful travel because of the hassle involve when connecting from one plane to another. “Sometimes they arrive and no baggage, and anger is displayed immediately which sometimes lead to us losing business,” he said. “The direct flight is less hassling and this has a direct impact on our business. When a visitor arrive feeling comfortable the decision to take a taxi is made without second thoughts. So are happy that Air Jamaica is back,” Romaine added. Air Jamaica resumed its flights to Grenada one month after the struggling carrier suspended its flying to three Caribbean destinations-- St Lucia, Barbados and Grenada-- to comply with local safety regulations at its headquarters in Jamaica. However, the airline is only resuming flights to Barbados and Grenada. Air Jamaica is the only direct flight from the US to Grenada. In its absence, passengers to Grenada had to make use of connect flight from Barbados, Trinidad or Antigua. The airline is planning on schedule of six weekly flights from New York to Grenada and Barbados and six weekly flights from Grenada and Barbados to New York and Los Angeles.
