ST. GEORGE'S, Grenada - A fire Tuesday destroyed part of a 120-year-old secondary school that had been severely damaged in Hurricane Ivan and had been earmarked for a World Bank-funded restoration project. No one was injured. The fire destroyed the principal's office, the staff room, an information technology center and several classrooms at the Grenada Boys' Secondary School in the capital of St. George's. Most of its 800 students were still on their way to school when the fire started. Police and firefighters were trying to determine the cause of the blaze, said police spokesman Troy Garvey. The school was severely damaged in Hurricane Ivan, which tore through Grenada on Sept. 7, killing 39 people and leaving a wasteland of ruined buildings. Many students had already been attending classes in tents. The World Bank had agreed to provide Eastern Caribbean $4.5 million (US$1.7 million) to rebuild the school. It was not immediately clear how the fire would affect the project. Education Minister Claris Charles said the government may erect plywood structures for classes. The school opened in 1885.
