FALSE EVIDENCE BLOCKED WILDMAN'S APPOINTMENT AS ATTORNE...
THE GRENADA Government yesterday raised concern that fraudulent evidence may have been used to block the appointment of Jamaican lawyer, Hugh Wildman, as the island's attorney-general last month. The Judicial and Legal Services Commission of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) had ruled against Wildman's nomination after the Grenada Bar Association and civil organisations launched public protests. The Keith Mitchell administration subsequently appointed Legal Affairs Minister, Elvin Nimrod, as attorney-general, while naming Wildman as a special legal adviser to the Cabinet. The Prime Minister's Press Secretary, Barry Collymore, told the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) yesterday that the government had received a letter showing that the evidence used by the Bar was false. "The Bar Association presented a dossier to the Judicial and Legal Services Commission. Contained in that dossier was an email implicating Mr. Wildman of improper conduct. The gentleman who that email was credited to has since written the Government of Grenada saying he sent no such email. CHARACTER ASSASSINATED "So what this means is that the character of one of our most brilliant legal minds has been assassinated. His appointment has been rejected based on a fraudulent bit of evidence and it really is not good for the country," Collymore lamented. He said while the government has no intention of pursuing the matter, it wants the Bar and other groups to be more responsible. "The government is calling on all parties to be more cautious and to be more conscientious before rushing to go to judgement because what has happened is that Grenada has been denied the services of a man who we consider to be the most qualified person for that job based on fraudulent evidence," Collymore said. Former president of the Bar Association, Reynold Benjamin, told CMC the government is only trying to "save face". Reprinted from jamaica-gleaner.com
