WI CRICKET NEEDS COMPREHENSIVE OVERHAUL
ST JOHN’S, Antigua: Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer is calling for a rethink of all aspects of cricket in the Caribbean in an effort to halt failing fortunes of the West Indies team. "We need a complete overhaul, a comprehensive look at where we are in cricket at all levels in order to come to terms with the crisis that seems to be evident in cricket throughout the region," he said. "I’m of the view that there is some serious rethinking and restructuring necessary at the level of administration of the game and how we deal with cricket in each of the Caribbean territories - programmes that are in place - how effective those are," Spencer added. He said regional politicians have been concerned about the inconsistent performances of the Windies and discussed this issue at meetings of Prime Ministerial Sub-Committee on cricket under chairmanship of Grenadian Prime Minister, Dr Keith Mitchell. "I wouldn’t say heated but we’ve discussed pros and cons of the Windies cricket and crisis we seem to be going through, not only at level of players but even at level of administration," he said. "Clearly, it’s of some concern to political directorate throughout the region and even in this latest debacle we would have had, they had to be some degree of involvement on part of political directorate led by Mitchell," he added. "I’m not sure if we were able to properly and effectively resolve those issues. There’s still a standoff and it’s clearly not good for Windies cricket." In reference to the region’s lack of fast bowling resources, he said the problem was difficult to comprehend. "It’s really unfathomable. Over the years we’ve been renowned for producing fast bowlers of great ability and stature. That has been one of Windies greatest attributes in terms of game," he said and added, "It’s really, really depressing when you find that in this day and age a lot things are now available. The opportunities, remuneration, everything is in place and yet we are not getting results we are looking for." Reprinted from jang.com.pk
