REGIONAL FIRMS NEED A RELIABLE SUPPLY OF LABOUR
Medium-size and large firms in some Caribbean countries say they are getting more opportunities than they have human resources to drive them. Grenada’s Ambassador to the World Trade Organisation, Dr. Patrick Antoine says this is why the free movement of labour provision in the CARICOM Single Market and Economy is very important, so that workers can move to the countries where they are most needed. He said small to medium sized companies that want to concentrate on the lower end of the spectrum which does not require much highly trained human capital also say they can't get enough reliable labour. Dr. Antoine says more specialists are now needed in the region. "We need to look at specialisation...Specialisation didn't occur because if you specialised, you had to leave the region, so the single market gives us a platform to sort that out," he said.
