Ministry of Education is delighted to announce that eight Grenadian students at Midwestern State University were recognized for their outstanding scholarly achievements and were inducted into the Cap and Gown chapter of the Mortar Board Senior Honour Society. The Grenadian students were among 44 emerging senior inductees from the entire university. Six other Caribbean students, all Dominicans, were also inducted. The inductees, in the ceremony concluding the 2004-2005 school year, included Sigmund Courtney, Joel Douglas, Helyne Frederick, Vernessa Gilbert, Charmaine Munro, Michelle Thomas, Carla Sylvester, and Annette Thomas. The students are all expected to graduate from the university between May and August of 2006. On May 14, thirteen Grenadians and twenty-three others from the Caribbean, are expected to be among the over 800 students receiving degrees from Midwestern. In August, a record 30 Grenadians, are expected to be among the 80 Caribbean students who will begin studies at the university. University President Dr. Jesse Rogers stated that they are taking affirmative steps to increase the number of students from the Caribbean. Dr. Rogers also commented on concerns about the slight drop in overall performance, but said that they are encouraged that students from the Caribbean can meet the higher standards if challenged to do so. Dr. Rogers noted that the courage shown by Grenadian students after Hurricane Ivan prompted the university to revisit the funding for the Caribbean program and to strengthen its efforts to expand the 2005-2006 class. Calypsonian Winston ‘Gypsy’ Peter’s, will join his colleague Hollis ‘Chalkdust’ Liverpool, as an artistic patron of the program and will perform and deliver the graduation address at the Graduation dinner for Caribbean students Source: Ministry of Education
