GRENADA'S JASON ROBERTS WINS WIGAN'S CLUB PLAYER OF THE...
LONDON, England: Grenada striker Jason Roberts was named Wigan's 2005 club player of the year in front of 7,000 fans at the JJB Stadium on Tuesday. Roberts hit his 21st goal of the season in a 3-1 home victory over Reading - a game that saw the championship team earning promotion to the Premiership. Roberts broke his leg in the match but even with the injury the Grenadian hit-man played more than an hour in the game before being substituted in the 63rd minute. "I will be on crutches for six weeks, but hopefully I will make a speedy recovery," said a smiling Roberts. "It was a strange way to end the season for me, but despite the injury, we got the result we wanted and that's all that mattered. "We made sure of our place in the Premier League which was our aim at the start of the season and we feel really good that we have achieved it." Roberts picked up the injury in the 10th minute of the game seconds after heading a ball wide of the target. The striker managed to continue playing and got his reward in the 21st minute with a well placed shot past Reading's goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann. On Tuesday the Grenadian international told his club website that he thought it was just a knock. "I ended up taking a knock and fractured my fibula....but I should be back in time for training with the rest of the boys for the new season. It'll heal no problem." Roberts also said that after seeing the state of the injury it was strange that he managed to play so long. "I find it a bit strange myself how I managed to get through the rest of the game for the fifty or sixty minutes that I played with it, but I just had to do what we needed to ensure we got promotion," Roberts said. When asked about his feelings heading to the top flight Roberts said: "It's sinking in a little bit, but it still feels strange that we've actually done it now. We always believed in ourselves that we finally would, and now we have done it, so it's really good." The 27-year-old told the website that he would welcome any new faces as long as they are willing to help the team move forward. "I would be happy to see new players here, if you're going to be at a club that's always going forward, then new players are always going to come and your place is always going to be under threat, so hopefully that will be the situation. "I won't put a number on how many players are going to come here, you'll have to ask the manager that, but whatever he wants to do, then that's fine by me. We will still have to fight for our place, which is the way it should be." In commenting on the topic of new faces, Wigan's manager Paul Jewell said it was too early for that talk and time will tell what happen "I am in no rush to talk about a new contract," insisted Jewell. "That will take care of itself in time, and instead there are a lot of issues which need to be resolved because the club is now about to play in arguably the biggest league in the world."
