MINISTRY TAKING TOURISM TO THE PEOPLE
The Ministry of Tourism is embarking on a programme to provide more information about opportunities within the industry. Minister of Tourism Hon. Brenda Hood recently held a meeting with the ARD and USAID, to discuss matters relating to tourism. The Minister informed the meeting of the Ministry’s plans to go out into the communities to educate persons on the importance of tourism and how they can contribute to the development of the industry. She also said that eco and agro tourism are two areas which have great potential and the Ministry is looking into developing these markets. The minister is hoping that these projects will empower persons to become self-employed. In addition to the Ministry’s plans, the conference also heard of the work being done by the ARD and USAID. These organisations are assisting with funds and other technical support to make training and other projects within the Ministry a reality. To date the USAID has organized programs for training of various persons in areas such as landscaping, hospitality and tour operating and scuba diving operations. USAID consultant Cathy Holler has also been assisting with the development of tour operating both locally and internationally. She will be here for one week to make observations on the physical and economic structure of Grenada’s tourism industry by visiting various relevant tourism locations and speaking to stakeholders.
