CHANDERPAUL SEES IMPROVEMENTS DESPITE LOSS
GROS ISLET, St Lucia (CMC) - Despite suffering their second successive One-Day International Series whitewash on Sunday, West Indies' captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul says there are some positives that can be taken from the defeat. The West Indies went down by 22 runs to Pakistan in the third and final ODI of the Digicel Series at the Beausejour Stadium, to slip to their ninth consecutive loss in one-dayers dating back to the VB Triangular Series in Australia earlier this year. But the new Windies skipper found solace in the performance by the team's batsmen. "I thought that Chris (Gayle) batted well, Wavell (Hinds) and Chris, the two of them set it up well," Chanderpaul explained. "Myself and Chris also we had it on track, but just after we started to lose it a bit there, but we were on track and Chris did well to come through there. Huge total, big ask, but the guys did pretty well." Batting first after losing the toss, Pakistan rattled up 303 for six in their 50 overs with Bazid Khan (66), Shahid Afridi (56) and Yousuf Youhana (50) all chipping in with half-centuries. When West Indies batted, opener Gayle slammed 124 from 137 balls to lead the charge, but the Windies were dismissed for 281 from 49.3 overs. The regional team now face Pakistan in the first match of the two-Test series beginning Thursday in Barbados and Chanderpaul is hoping that the improvement made by the batsmen in the last ODI will help to turn the team's fortunes around. "At least some of our batters (are) looking the part again, Chris (is) maturing well, (and we are) hoping that Wavell could get back in touch," Chanderpaul said. "We have some senior guys coming back like Brian (Lara) and a couple others. Hopefully, we could put our heads down, put the runs on the board and give the bowlers a chance to do the job." The second Test is scheduled for Jamaica from June 3-7. Reprinted from jamaicaobserver.com
