PM MITCHELL MEETS WITH GOUYAVE FISHERMEN
The Government of Grenada has given its commitment to ensure that fishermen benefit most from any investment in the fishing industry. During a meeting yesterday, Tuesday May 24, with representatives from the fishing village of Gouyave, Prime Minister Dr. the Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell gave this commitment outlining the way forward for the industry in the Post-Ivan era. The Prime Minister said he is concerned about the marketing situation for the catch, and pledged government’s support in ensuring that the fishermen have a ready market for their excesses. He emphasized that the fishermen themselves should honestly explore other markets, and in turn the government will help with the excess fish available. Representatives of the group, Barry Alexis, Keith Bernadine and Dexter Chance outlined some of the immediate problems faced, chief of which is the non-functioning of the Grenada Commercial Fisheries Company Limited. According to the fishermen, Commercial Fisheries has over the years been their main buyer. The fact that they do not presently, buy their catch is posing a number of problems to them and is adversely affecting the industry in that area… The fishermen suggested that their interest and the interest of the boat owners be represented on the Board of Directors of the Grenada Commercial Fisheries Company. Prime Minister Mitchell invited the fishermen to organize a meeting with the other fishermen in the village for next week to chart the way forward. Source: Office of the Prime Minister
