LARA NOTCHES CENTURY NO. 29 BUT FAILS TO SAVE WINDIES
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (AP) - Brian Lara blazed a superb 130 yesterday, but the West Indies were bowled out for a modest 345 on the first day of the opening cricket Test against Pakistan at Kensington Oval. The star left-hander cracked 16 fours and four sixes off 120 deliveries as his 29th Test century and captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul's gritty 92 gave the home team substance. It was Lara's first century against Pakistan and he became the fifth batsman to complete hundreds against all nine Test-playing countries. He followed South Africa's Gary Kirsten, Australia's Steve Waugh and the Indians Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid. All-rounder Abdul Razzaq led Pakistan's bowling with three for 58. Fellow pacer Shabbir Ahmed claimed two early wickets and finished with three for 66. Leg-spinner Danish Kaneria was expensive, but collected the key scalps of Lara and Chanderpaul on his way to three for 114. The West Indies struggled after they won the toss and batted first. Shabbir provided the visitors with the early initiative with the dismissals of Chris Gayle and Ramnaresh Sarwan in a lengthy new ball spell. Left-hander Gayle fell in the fourth over, lofting a loose back foot drive low to mid-off. Sarwan edged a tentative defensive prod to third slip, where Bazid Khan made a good low catch. Devon Smith compiled 19 before Razzaq further set back the West Indies in his first over. The left-handed batsman, back in the side for the first time since the opening Test against South Africa in March, nicked to Yasir Hameed at first slip. Lara and Chanderpaul repaired the damage of 45 for three in a stand of 169 for the fourth wicket that was dominated by Lara's brilliance. The 36-year-old quickly took command with two boundaries in one Shabbir over and none of the bowlers was spared his sword. Kaneria was blasted in the second session and three of Lara's sixes were huge overhead lashes off the leg-spinner that peppered the stands at the northern end. Lara, who survived a difficult chance to Younis Khan when on 25, raced to his century midway through the day off 88 balls with three sixes and 14 fours. He gave a more straightforward chance to Yasir Hameed at first slip on 103 in Afridi's first over. He soon blasted the same bowler for his fourth six to maintain his dominance. But just as the small crowd that grew to 3,000 was beginning to sense something special, Kaneria made a crucial breakthrough to bowl Lara through the gate as he drove at a leg break. Lara's dismissal brought a more focused approach from Chanderpaul. The 30-year-old forged useful stands with Wavell Hinds (28), Courtney Browne (12) and Daren Powell (10) before a typical lower order slide saw the last four wickets tumble for nine runs. Hinds added 49 with his captain but ran himself out just as he began to blossom. He was too late turning back as Chanderpaul denied a second run and wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal's direct hit found Hinds short. Shabbir returned to claim Browne to a catch to Kamran Akmal and Razzaq bowled Powell with an inswinger. Chanderpaul, who struck 10 fours off 193 balls in four and a half hours, lofted a catch to extra cover as he made room to attack through the off side. Afridi smacked a six over square leg off pacer Powell to power the Pakistan reply in the quarter hour before close.
