EDUATION MINISTRY'S ENHANCED LEARNING PROGRAMME CONTINU...
The Ministry of Education’s Enhanced Learning Programme continues to attract additional students every Saturday, with some centres having to increase staffing. The programme, designed to increase performance standards among students especially in Reading and Mathematics is being administered in 19 centres throughout Grenada and Carriacou. The programme started on May 7th, 2005 and will run through June 2005. The Programme will close for the summer vacation and then resume at the beginning of the new school term September 2005. The Enhanced Learning program recognizes that the baseline for enhancement is the systematic awareness of the current learning experience of students, the standards of their achievement and the standard set by the very student. A key aspect influencing the learning experience of students is the role-played by students themselves. Students are active partners with shared responsibilities for their own learning and achievement. The focus therefore is mostly on learning (and less on direct-teaching methods) during which student ownership of the learning process is developed. It provides minimum constraints on access, pace and method of study and at the same time allows students to share, discuss, ask, collaborate, teach and learn. The programme is designed to help every child in need of assistance in his or her learning, to function at his/her maximum potential. The programme targets a variety of students: The 13 year olds who would have entered Secondary School in September 2004. Other Forms one and two students who are having problems with their reading and Mathematics. Students in forms 1, 2, and 3 who need help with concepts they were not able to master during the school year in other core areas such as Social Sciences. Other students who have a desire to upgrade their present performance. Upon entering the programme, students are given a diagnostic test to identify their strengths and weaknesses. The programme is designed to take students from where they are and to build on their competences to master concepts at a variety of levels until they can function at their cognitive age level. This process will allow students to experience a number of successes in a slow and progressive manner thereby building confidence while at the same time recognizing the relationship between effort and outcome.
