PAKISTAN LEVEL SERIES
Pakistan needed just 12.5 overs lasting 55 minutes on yesterday's fifth and final day to complete a series equalling 136-run win over West Indies at Sabina Park. Scores in a game which was even until the fourth afternoon when the visitors took control: Pakistan 374 and 309; West Indies 404 and 143. The Pakistani triumph made up for the first Test defeat in Bridgetown, Barbados, which the home team won by 276 runs. Pakistan, who were winning their first Test match in the West Indies since 1988, had earlier swept the limited overs series, 3-0. Resuming at 114-6, the West Indies lower order batsmen, as anticipated, proved no match for Pakistan's pace/spin attack. And as it turned out yesterday, the visitors only needed the services of the tall, pencil slim seamer Shabbir Ahmed, and man-of-the-match Danish Kaneria with his mystifying wrist spin. The 24 year-old Kaneria, who broke the back of the West Indies batting on the fourth day by removing top scorer Devon Smith (49), Ramnaresh Sarwan (8), man-of-the-series Brian Lara (0) and West Indies skipper Shivnarine Chanderpaul (0), followed up with the scalp of Daren Powell (12) yesterday. His 5-46 was Kaneria's 11th five-wicket haul in 28 Tests - the kind of statistic that supports speculation that he could be the true successor to the great Shane Warne. The six-foot, five-inch Shabbir, who must now undergo review and rehabilitation of his jerky action after being reported to the ICC in the Barbados Test, yesterday disposed of Courtney Browne (10), Tino Best (4) and Reon King (4) to close with 4-55 and match figures of 8-119. In post-match interviews, Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq, who missed the first Test because of a discipline-related ICC suspension, described himself as "a happy man". The tall, burly Inzamam, not only led his side to victory, he scored an unbeaten 117 in the second innings after being dropped first ball by West Indies wicketkeeper Courtney Browne. This, after scoring 50 in the first innings. Inzamam argued that Kaneria's 14-over spell in which he removed the cream of the West Indies batting on the rain-hit fourth afternoon, had made the essential difference in the game. ". The difference was Danish's bowling, he bowled tremendously well.," said Inzamam. Kaneria conceded that the Sabina wicket, which provided sharp turn for spinners and variable bounce for all bowlers, had helped him and thanked his captain and management staff for their support. "The occasion needed me, so I did my best for the team," Kaneria said of his five-wicket haul. Chanderpaul, while disappointed with having to draw the series, thought it was "a decent series for us." The situation and the Sabina pitch needed the bowlers to "put the ball in the right places", but unfortunately, only Corey Collymore, who picked up match figures of 11-134 - the best ever at Sabina Park, did so with any consistency.
