The Ministry of Education is happy to announce that the Japanese Government has, to date, approved under its Grant Assistance for Grass- Roots Human Security Projects (GGP), financial support for rehabilitation projects at five schools on the island, with other projects pending approval. Approval has been obtained for projects at the St. Mary’s Junior School, St. Joseph’s Convent St. George’s, St. David’s Catholic Secondary School, Mac Donald College, and Wesley College. Several schools applied to the GGP for Grants to support initiatives is areas such as the remodeling and rebuilding of computer laboratories and libraries, rebuilding of classrooms, to the restoration of school farms. Mr. Toshiaki Seto, third Secretary, Economy Section of the Embassy in Japan said that he is currently awaiting approval for several other schools and should receive it from the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in about a week. Mr. Seto also stated that another Japanese official would visit Grenada next week to meet with several schools to discuss their proposed projects. The Japanese Ambassador is also scheduled to visit Grenada to sign contracts with the five approved schools. The GGP provides up to US$100,000.00 nonrefundable financial assistance to NGO’s, hospitals, schools, and other nonprofit associations to help implement their development projects. The availability of GGP funding in each eligible country provides Japanese Overseas Development Aid (ODA) with a new means of cooperation that has a direct impact on the well being of grass-roots communities.
