I WON'T BE A LIABILITY, SAYS LARA
Veteran batsman Brian Lara has insisted he will not outstay his welcome in the West Indies team and will play on only as long as his form warrants. "I'm cutting down a bit in one-dayers, trying to concentrate on Tests to bring more length to my career," he said. "At present I'm playing decent cricket but if I do become a liability to West Indies cricket I would step aside." Lara, 36, has scored 724 runs in five Tests since losing the captaincy to Shivnarine Chanderpaul. He captained an International XI in the Tsunami Relief Match at Lord's on Tuesday, scoring a cameo 27-ball 42, including a straight six off Anil Kumble. A late batting collapse saw his side lose by 112 runs to the MCC but he was pleased to play an extra match at the home of cricket. Love for Lord's West Indies are not scheduled to tour England again until 2007, shortly after the next World Cup, which in the past Lara has set as a probable retirement date. Lara, who led the Windies in last year's Test series defeat in England, said he wasn't sure if he'd played his last game at Lord's. "I thought the Test match [last year] was, but I played again today," he added. "I've always loved playing at Lord's. Every time I go out there I try to make sure that people see the best of me." Meanwhile, Lara urged England to remain assertive during all five days of each test when they face Australia in the Ashes. "England have to be aggressive in all three sessions during a day and they have to maintain it for 15 sessions in a match," he advised. "They can't allow the world champions to dictate. "It's going to be a good contest but I don't know if it's going to be close. Hopefully it won't be one sided." Reprinted from bbccaribbean.com
