CARIBBEAN CUP SOCCER 2005 OPENING DAY HAD SOME SURPRISE...
Last Sunday’s opening day in the 2005 Caribbean Cup Championships had some surprising results for the record number of soccer fans who came out to the Jefferson High School field in Brooklyn. Following a colorful opening ceremony which included a march past of most of the teams in this year's competition, fans were treated to an exciting afternoon of soccer action. St. Kitts/Nevis: 1 Guyana: 0 The 2005 season opener was a stunner in which St. Kitts/Nevis beat Guyana for the first time in cup history. There was enthusiastic play by both teams and the resulting victory was well earned. St. Kitts had come on strong late in the 2004 season, making their first trip to the playoffs. Grenada: 0 Dominica: 0 The feature game also proved to be surprising, with Dominica playing its first ever game in the Caribbean Cup against defending champions, Grenada. Fans who had been expecting the boys from the Spice Isle to dominate play, were amazed at the result. It was a tough defensive game, and the Dominicans were impressive on the field, serving notice to the other teams that they are ready to take on all comers. The Grenadians may not have been expecting this level of competition from the newcomers and narrowly missed several chances to score. They now know that repeating as champs will not be an easy road. The 14th season of the Caribbean Cup continues this Sunday, June 19 at the Jefferson High School field on Flatlands and Shepherd avenues in Brooklyn. Tickets for the preliminary round are $7, and fans interested in season tickets can call: 718-859-7300 for details.
