ANTI-SQUATTING UNIT AT WORK
The members of the Anti-Squatting team have been out in the south of the island erecting signs and talking to squatters in the south of St. George. Since the passage of Hurricane Ivan the illegal act of squatting on Government land has been on the increase causing the Government of Grenada to react, by forming an Anti-Squatting Unit. The Unit is staffed by members of the Ministry of Agriculture who work in collaboration with the Physical Planning Unit of the Ministry of Finance and others. The Unit has been active in the Limes, Morne Rouge and the Calliste areas (close to the Airport). Public Relations officer in the Ministry of Agriculture Nicholas Neckles said that “we have been making a lot of progress since we started, the task is great, we are out there on a daily basis all over the island, but surprisingly most of the people that we have dealt with thus far have been cooperating with us, and we have been able to move them without any trouble”. “We are now concentrating our efforts in the south of the island, mainly the limes on the hill overlooking the Morne Rouge area and Morne Rouge. We will be issuing notices to these people and they will have 28 days to move, the area is sloping and the cutting of the trees on the hill side can cause land slides, no proper sanitation, and there are reports of fights and stealing among the squatters in these areas” Nicholas Neckles said. The Ministry is also appealing to boat owners along the lagoon road to please remove their boats; the presence of the boats along the shore line is hindering the beautification work that should have been started already. Despite several attempts by the ministry to have the owners remove the boats, the owners have yet to move them. The Ministry of Agriculture is once again appealing to the boat owners to please cooperate and move their boats.
