CABINET APPROVES DOMESTIC VIOLENCE RULES
The Grenada Government is putting the heavy rollers on the practice of domestic violence by putting systems in place for the protection of victims of abuse. With the coming into effect of the Domestic Act, which was passed in Parliament in 2001, domestic violence in Grenada should become less and less popular. The Domestic Violence Act endorsed by Cabinet makes provision for Court Orders to be made in the Magistrate’s Court for the protection of Domestic violence and covers the Protection, Occupation and Tenancy Orders. The Law also caters for affidavits and other document to be filed in support of application for these Orders although the use of this Legislation has been limited, as the application forms for the Orders were not passed along with the Legislation but this will be soon sorted out. Among the benefits and possible consequences of the Act are the anticipated widespread uses of the act in addition to the fact that matters can be heard In the Magistrate’s Court and thus be readily available and affordable for domestic violence victims.
