GRENADA PM CHALLENGES REGIONAL LEADERS TO BE MORE UNIFI...
CASTRIES, St Lucia: Grenada's Prime Minister, Dr Keith Mitchell, has called on Caribbean leaders to be more unified in their approaches to policies that affect the people of region. While speaking at a special meeting for Caribbean leaders and Parliamentary Opposition leaders in Castries, the Prime Minister said that regional leaders were guilty of creating "Doubting Thomases" among the people of the region. He said that regional leaders needed to go forward boldly to implement measures which would enhance the lives of the people of the region. He said in the past Governments have agreed to implement certain policies regionally and then because of pressure from Opposition parties or from other groups they had changed their minds. The Grenadian leader said this kind of approach made it difficult for the region's people to believe in Governments to effect positive change. He also noted that there have been times when countries have suffered adversely because Governments had buckled to pressure. Prime Minister Mitchell was responding to comments from several leaders about political opportunism being practiced by political parties. The meeting agreed that this kind of politics needed to be stamped out for the greater good of the region. Several leaders noted that with the tough times ahead Government and Opposition parties needed to work for the greater good of the country and not to satisfy their own special needs. The meeting also agreed that Governments should provide more information to the region's people on issues such as CSME and other regional issues.
