OECS EXAMINING ECONOMIC IMPACT OF HURRICANES ON GRENADA...
CASTRIES, St Lucia (CMC) - The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) has sent an impact assessment mission to Grenada, as that island continues its recovery from the second hurricane to strike in 10 months. A statement from the Castries-based OECS Secretariat, said while a number of countries affected by the passage of Hurricane Emily earlier this month were quickly getting over the damage, Grenada continues to struggle having not fully overcome the rampage of Hurricane Ivan last year. Senior Communication Officer Kendol Morgan, who has just returned from Grenada, as part of a two- member preliminary assessment team, said although Hurricane Emily struck Grenada as a category one hurricane, it damaged and destroyed more than 2000 homes on the island's northern coast. The OECS Secretariat said another assessment team headed by Dr. Vasantha Chase had been sent to Grenada to determine the economic impact of Hurricane Emily. It noted that while Grenada, an OECS member, has received some assistance from international donor organisations, a significant portion was in the form of loan financing. In 2003, before the passage of Hurricane Ivan, Grenada had already amassed a debt of US$349 million. Reprinted from antiguasun.com
