FRANCIQUE LEADS GRENADIAN QUARTET TO WORLD CHAMPS
Reigning World Indoor 400-metre champion Alleyne Francique leads Grenada's four-member team to the 10th IAAF World Championships in Helsinki, Finland starting this weekend. Central American and Caribbean (CAC) two-time 800-metre champion, Neisha Bernard-Thomas, Hazel-Ann Regis and Randy Lewis join Francique in the quartet. Francique is attempting to redeem himself from his fourth place finish at the Athens Olympic Games last August when he entered the event as a strong medal favourite. "I expect to win a medal, I am in good shape," Francique said in a telephone interview from his training base in Texas. "If I execute my race the way I want to, I will win the gold medal," he added. Regis, who was eliminated in the first round of the women's 400 at the Paris World Championships in 2003, has been a consistent qualifier for major championships, while Lewis, who participated in the men's triple jump at the Athens Olympic Games, will be at his first World Championship. Bernard-Thomas, who won gold medals at the CAC Seniors in the Bahamas and the Crystal Palace Grand Prix in London last month, is also participating in her first World Championship.
