MISSION OUTREACH TO GRENADA
With the island of Grenada almost totally devastated by Hurricane Ivan, and with 95 percent of buildings destroyed, a team of young people from the Cayman Islands have come up with an initiative to assist this troubled island, which will take years to be restored to its former state. The youngsters are from the Elmslie and Savannah United Churches, and they answered a call to go to Grenada during August to help build a home for homeless people on the Island. The team is going to Grenada under the auspices of ‘Ministries In Action’ (MIA), a Miami-based organization which, with the help of mission teams and financial donations, under the direction of Dr Walford Thompson, will organize and work with local government authorities, families and friends of the homeless, to construct homes within a short time. Dr Thompson is well known to Cayman, having visited many times, strengthening and promoting missions through his organization. The mission team is scheduled to be involved in what is called “Project Ebenezer”, which is a home-building project located in the mountains of Mirabeau, situated almost at the centre of the island. Not only did Hurricane Ivan do its damage in Grenada, but Grenada was also hit hard with the passing of both hurricanes Dennis and Emily. The people of Grenada are therefore in great need of basic items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, and other hygienic supplies. The children also are in need of school supplies, and would appreciate treats such as toys, candy and cookies. Anyone wishing to contribute can contact the team leaders of the MIA Ann Sully at 949-7923 or Noel Wallace at 927-0565, who will be happy to collect the donated items and deliver them to Grenada.
