Grenada Yacht Club, St. George’s, Grenada – At this year’s Sixth Summer Regatta the Grenada Yacht Club introduced the Laddie McIntyre Award. Charles ‘Laddie’ McIntyre, who passed away recently, was a founding member of the Grenada Yacht Club (GYC) and of the Grenada Chapter of Rotary Int., a board member of NEWLO since inception, a President of the Chamber of Commerce, Private Sector representative in the Senate … his list of merits goes on and on. “He was known by most people in Grenada and was the embodiment of determination and true grit, so it is important for the public to know that there is now an annual award to recognise these important and needed human qualities and that sailing can help foster and develop them,” stated Darryl Brathwaite Commodore of the GYC. McIntyre’s influence is indelibly stamped on the club and many of its members. Over the years he taught many young men and women to sail, race and build boats. James Benoit, Secretary Board Member of the GYC, Race Committee Officer and official measurer, has referred to Laddie McIntyre as his mentor and the person who “had always been there for me and through the years gave me a lot of advice.” This year the award was unveiled at the Sunday night top awards ceremony for the Summer Regatta. It was first presented to Laddie’s son Michael McIntyre and his daughter Anne McIntyre Campbell. They then presented it to the first winner of the special Laddie McIntyre Overall Winner Award. It went to Jason Fletcher and his boat Apero for “dogged determination”. During one of the races, Jason Fletcher had been leading the race and then he made what the race committee termed “a hopelessly humongous mistake.” Undaunted Fletcher corrected the error and forged on to eventually place second in that race. Additionally, as further tribute to Laddie McIntyre, one of the Summer Regatta race markers was also dedicated to Laddie and now bears that name.
