CHAIRMAN OF CWC 2007 ORGANISING COMMITTEE SAYS WHY HE R...
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) - Rawle Brancker, the former 2007 ICC World Cup West Indies board chairman, resigned from the position over major differences with managing director Chris Dehring. The 67-year-old Brancker explained that the relationship between Dehring and himself had deteriorated so badly that they could hardly see eye-to-eye on a number of matters. "The core problem is that Chris Dehring, who was appointed two years before the World Cup board was appointed, got used to working on his own, and never wanted a board," Brancker told reporters in a near-hour long statement at a news conference on Wednesday. "He thought the World Cup board was an imposition. But the board had a fiduciary responsibility, and every board on which I have sat has always been accountable, and that's the way I sought to conduct its business. "Ever since (my appointment), efforts have been made to frustrate and marginalise mainly myself, but also other members of the World Cup board, who are outspoken and inclined to questioning." Brancker, a former Barbados left-arm, slow bowling all-rounder, detailed several disagreements which he and other members of the World Cup board had with Dehring. "There was a pattern of presenting issues at their closing stages, or presented as if they needed immediate closure, thus not allowing adequate time for the board to study options," Brancker said. "The World Cup board had to endure being constantly told that almost everything was an International Cricket Council stipulation, only for us to be recently told by both the ICC president and chief executive that if the board wishes to change something, it should say so. "They made it clear the 2007 World Cup was as much the West Indies' as it was the ICC's. They insisted that Chris alone should not interact with ICC, but that he and I should have regular meetings to clear areas about which the board has concerns." Brancker listed disagreements with Dehring over the appointment of Venue Development Director Don Lockerbie, a multi-million insurance deal, and a multi-million deal for event and management services. Brancker also outlined a dispute with Dehring over regional speculation about the MD's involvement in Jamaican television network Sportsmax and alleged conflict of interest, as well as repeated production of board papers, especially financial info, much too close to board meetings. "I would imagine that it is only reasonable that any board or chairman committed to transparency and integrity would have problems in situations such as these," he said. After continued disputes between Dehring and himself, Brancker disclosed that a three-man committee comprising Ambassador Julian Hunte, Eddie Greene, and former West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) president Teddy Griffith was called in to investigate the relationship between the two. "At the World Cup board meeting last Saturday, I gave a further commitment to do all within my power to work with the MD and/or whoever, having long recognised the importance of the 2007 World Cup to our region, and the fact that so much investment in mind and money was being put into the event," Brancker said. "The MD was then asked how he felt about the way in which he would continue, and he said he could not continue with me. This was his strategy to panic board members, and it worked. "Some members then asked him not to go, as he had all the knowledge and all the regional and international parties knew him and that the World Cup could be wrecked. I was and am not of that opinion. The 2007 World Cup can be very successfully delivered without the MD. "If the transparency, accountability, and best practice I insist upon on behalf of the board is too much for Chris to live with, and some board members cannot see he should go - then I am gone," said Brancker.
