PORT OF SPAIN ROCKED BY ANOTHER EXPLOSION
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad: There has been another explosion in downtown Port of Spain, Trinidad -- the third in three months -- this time outside the popular Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) fast food outlet on Independence Square. The explosion occurred around 12 noon on Saturday. Investigators said an explosive device was placed in a dumpster just outside the KFC food outlet. The device was detonated as the city sanitation workers attempted to remove the day’s garbage from the dumpster. A loud explosion was heard, sending people scampering for safety. There were no fatalities. One employee of the fast food outlet however suffered damage to one ear. Up to late Saturday there were no arrests in connection with this latest explosion. This is the third such incident in three months. The first occurred on Monday, July 11, on Frederick Street, Port of Spain, injuring 15 people, two seriously, with one woman losing her left leg. The second occurred on George Street, Independence Square, on Wednesday, August 10. No one however was injured in this blast. All devices have been placed in or near garbage bins. On Friday afternoon there were also two bomb scares again in the city, one at the RBTT Bank and the other at the Unit Trust Building on Independence Square. Police are now investigating whether Friday’s bomb scares were related to Saturday’s explosion. Acting Police Commissioner, Glean Roach said the authorities had intelligence to suggest that some illegal activity was been planned by a group on Friday and that police were expecting something similar to occur. City Mayor, Murchison Brown, responding to the latest attack said he believed that some persons were attempting to destabilize the country.
