An enthusiastic audience of Grenadians, other Caribbean nationals and well-wishers were on hand on Saturday evening as a 17-year-old high school student, Alicia Calliste, was crowned Ms. Grenada/USA. The new queen, who had been a crowd favorite all night, took home several sectional prizes including most creative talent, best fitness and best personal interview. First runner up, Tanisha Williams, who also had a large cheering section in the audience, won for best evening gown, a beautiful confection in orange and gold that would have looked magnificent on any Hollywood red carpet. Williams shared the Grenadianconnection.com award for online favorite in a tie with Simone Cox with each contestant getting 24%. Second runner up Antonia Alibocas won a sectional award for most improved contestant and Jennise Belfon won for Miss Congeniality. The evening started on an up-tempo note with all five finalists performing a group dance in cultural costume. Then it was on to the casual wear portion of the show during which the audience got their first look at the girls in person, having had a preview on Grenadianconnection.com Web site. Crowd reaction to the swimwear segment of the evening’s program proved to be as loud and appreciative as usual, as the young ladies strutted their stuff across the stage. In the talent competition the girls showcased their abilities with acts ranging from a dramatic presentation done against the soundtrack of one of Maurice Bishop’s speeches to a steel pan rendition to dance. The final act was the most glamorous with the contestants resplendent in various styles of evening wear, from fashionably chic to movie-star sophisticated. In the question and answer category the young women provided some interesting commentary and presentations. During the proceedings, brief remarks were made by Grenada’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Her Excellency, Ruth Elizabeth Rouse and Consul General, Hon. Allen McGuire. A dance group, Angels on Earth, provided entertainment between segments. The Ms. Grenada/USA pageant, which is in its 14th year, is organized by the Grenada American Ex-Teachers Association.
