REVIEW OF PRIME MINISTER MITCHELL’S VISIT TO U.N.
The Prime Minister of Grenada Dr. The Rt. Hon. Keith C. Mitchell returned to the State on Saturday September 17, 2005, following his participation in the High-Level Plenary Meeting of the 60th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, held at the United Nations headquarters September 14 – 16 2005. Over 150 Heads of State and Government participated in the Summit which was held to review progress made in achieving the Millennium Developing Goals and conclude on a series of reforms with the Organisation. In delivering his address to the World Summit on Friday September 16th 2005, Dr. Mitchell said that despite being faced with the major task of rebuilding the Country and its economy, Grenada will continue to remain committed and dedicated to its obligations in support of the work of the organization. The Prime Minister applauded the efforts to improve the UN Central Emergency Revolving Fund which will seek to strengthen the effectiveness of the United Nations Humanitarian responses in a timely manner in case of emergencies. “We expect that this support to small island developing states will strengthen their ability to respond more efficiently and effectively to natural disasters and mitigate their impact”, the Prime Minister said. The Prime Minister told the assembly of world leaders that the passage of Hurricanes Ivan and Emily had reversed all the gains Grenada had made towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals. The Summit concluded with the President of the General Assembly urging member states to make it their duty to ensure that the Outcome Document makes a real difference in the outside world, especially in light of the anger of so many about the pace of progress toward the Millennium Development Goals. The Prime Minister and other Caribbean leaders held talks with Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin and joined other world leaders during a session with President George Bush. Prime Minister Mitchell participated as one of the leaders from the Group of Latin American and Caribbean States in one of the four Interactive Roundtables, held to discuss global issues on the UN agenda. The Prime Minister also met with the leaders in the New York Jewish Community during an event honouring Grenada’s Ambassador-at-Large, Mr. Michael Melnicke. Prime Minister Mitchell also took the opportunity to update the Caribbean Media on the current state of the reconstruction process in Grenada during a Press Conference in Brooklyn, and held interviews with WWRL 1600’s Rennie Bishop, Don Bobb of UN Radio, and Larry T. Gell of Global TV and Worldwide Webcast Media (“Inside the United Nations: The Global Issues”). The General Debate of the 60th Session continued on Saturday September 17 and will conclude on September 28. Source: Permanent Mission of Grenada To the United Nations
