TRAINING PROGRAM FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS  
Grenada’s Law Enforcement Officers will soon be receiving additional training primarily in the area of Counter Narcotics Enforcement. The signing ceremony marking the introduction of the Computer Based Training (CBT) took place today (September 19) at the Prime Minister’s Ministry. The Programme which is being supplied to Grenada by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime has been used in over 21 countries including Africa, Asia and Central America and is available in 13 languages. Kemal Kurspahic, Representative Caribbean Regional Office signed on behalf of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime while Sen. Einstein Louison, Minister for National Security signed on behalf of the Government of Grenada. Mr. Kurspahic spoke of the success of the programme worldwide. Sen. Louison expressed thanks for what he said is a timely programme especially given the fact that the Caribbean will be hosting the Cricket World Cup in 2007 and emphasis will be placed on the safety of the region and ensuring the protection of its international guests. Emphasis was placed on the importance of the standardized training which the CBT will afford officers of the law. It was also noted that this training is customized to suit the varying needs of different officers. The Caribbean Pilot Project was conducted in Jamaica and Barbados over a one year period and it is now being extended to 8 (eight) other Caribbean countries including Trinidad and Tobago and Antigua and Barbuda. The programme costs 218,500 US dollars. While the main area covered by the programme is Counter Narcotics Enforcements, a number of other related areas are also dealt with under the programme. Acting Commissioner of Police Winston James and heads of departments within the Royal Grenada Police Force together with senior Prisons and Customs officers were present the signing ceremony.
