ILLEGAL SAND MINING TARGETED
The Ministry of Works is working closely with Gravel Concrete and Emulsion Production Corporation and the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF) to put a stop to illegal sand mining. A team comprising members of the (RGPF), Technical Staff in the Ministry of Works, representatives from Gravel and Concrete recently visited beaches in St. Andrew’s and Carriacou where illegal sand mining has been occurring. Over the years illegal sand mining has become a very serious problem. There are beaches set aside for mining sand authorized by Gravel Concrete and Emulsion Production Corporation. However, some truckers and other individuals remove sand from beaches not allocated for sand removal without authorization from the relevant authorities. Illegal sand mining can result in changing the landscape of beaches making them unsuitable for bathing. This poses problems not only for locals but it compromises Grenada’s tourism product. Public Consultations are being organized to inform and educate the public on the issue of sand mining. Source: Ministry of Communication, Works & Transport
